The Pharisees of Jesus's day were the religious elites who aligned themselves with power, focused on the strict letter of the law while ignoring its weightier matters: justice, mercy, and faith. They loved the seats of honor and receiving public accolades, yet their hearts were closed to the marginalized, the poor, and the peacemakers.
Today, we see a disturbing parallel in modern religious nationalism. Many who claim to be the primary defenders of faith are the loudest voices advocating for military dominance, economic policies that favor the super-rich, and the exclusion of the vulnerable. They have turned the gospel of the poor and the peacemaker into a gospel of wealth and war.
Jesus stood in direct opposition to this mentality. He warned his followers to beware of the "yeast of the Pharisees," which is hypocrisy. To follow Jesus means to choose the path of active peace, radical inclusion, and economic justice over the glorification of power and privilege.
